At one of my customers, the Live and Development partitions can be on one of two boxes, depending on which is the production or mirror system. The corresponding virtual disk are mirrored using PowerHA.

After a switch to the mirror system, and the partitions are powered up - there is a license issue, because, as far as the partitions are concerned, the serial number has changed.

It would be nice if the IceBreak/BlueSeries licenses could be stored in a file (one for each system?). Then, calling a command (or program) with the file name as parameter, the licenses can be re-applied very quickly, and even automatically.

Does this feature already exist?

If you have a high availability system and need to switch between several license keys then you can use the following approach.

IceBreak, SMS BlueNote and BlueSeries all stores license codes into an user-space called BLUEBOX in QGPL.

Now – with this in mind, you can copy this user-space into a new name and copy it back if you make HA-switch over of partitions. You can not however move it to another system since it contains the serial number. But as long as the user space "is on the same serial number" it works fine.

So you have to configure the corespondent QGPL/BLUEBOX user-space when you are in the switch over mode. Then copy the user space and redo the configuration in a new user-space when you are back in normal mode again.

Thanks, Niels.

I reckon I can make this automatic by using an auto start job (say in sbs QBATCH), which checks the serial number, then renames the appropriate *USRSPC to BLUEBOX.

A couple of copies of the user space and a couple of renames on system start up should do the job.

Do you know how the licenses are held in InterForm/400 and whether a similar approach would work with this product?

In InterForm you can you can insert a Mirroring Key, so you can switch between the two machines.

  • apf3812/apfmenu
  • 70. Configuration and licences
  • 50. Licens Information

Enter the Mirroring Key
