In early august I was surprised to read, that one of our competitors is now introducing the possibility to create QR barcodes on the System i as the first vendor ever. For me and my colleagues (and hopefully also for you) QR is not that new. InterForm400 has actually been able to generate QR barcodes since the 2007 versions, which was introduced 4 years ago!

You can read the complete article here:

Please notice the red correction in the bottom:
This article was corrected. ACOM Solutions wasn't the first IBM i forms vendor to support QR codes. InterForm A/S has generated QR codes since 2007, and Meinikat informationssysteme GmbH has generated them since 2010. IT Jungle regrets the error.

So stay with InterForm, if you want stay ahead of the competition ;-)

QR is 2D barcode which has been around for long, but is now considered to be very ‘hip’ for many. The main advantage with the 2D barcodes is, that you can include a lot of text into a single barcode, thus reading e.g. the complete description of the contents of a pallet (or a full address) from a single scan. As creative examples I can mention these: A link to a web site (so you can be guided to a web site if scanning this with a smart phone) or even inserting your complete contact information in a standardized way (as either VCARD or MECARD) as a QR barcode on the back of a business card, so that information can be added to the address book of a smart phone via a simple scan.
