Rule # 1 It MUST be a Class 2 fax modem.

Rule # 2 We have always used the standards set for IBM’s Facsimile Support.

A modem that is recommended for IBM’s Facsimile Support can also be used for BlueSeries Fax.

This is the official list of modems supported by Facsimile Support:
http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/fax400/faqs/answer2.htm
The only exception is the "Multi-Tech MT5634ZBA-DID". BlueSeries has NOT support for DID.

You can see that the internal iSeries modems can be used for fax. This is described in e.g. the following Redbooks:

Redbook REDP-3750-00: http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpieces/pdfs/redp3750.pdf
(Page 36 describes feature # 9771 that matches paragraph 4 in the modem list)

Redbook “IBM @Server i5 and iSeries System Handbook”
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/ga195486.pdf
(See page 352 and 353 that matches paragraph 5 in the modem list)

Both Redbooks describe the internal modem and the extra cable (#0348 - V.24/EIA232
Cable) used to access the extra V.24 line on the card.

See attachment ...

The Redbooks describes that direct phone line can be used for ECS (Electronic Customer Support).

You can check if this line is vacant before installing BlueSeries.

Write “Go Hardware” on a command line
Select option 1. “Work with communication resources”
